Building vs Eliminating Habits
Everyone has tried to eliminate unhealthy habits. We have all said something like “I’m going to stop eating sweets at night” or “I’m going to stop eating fast food”. The problem with this is that these things become a forbidden fruit and often make you crave them even more! Another approach to building a sustainable and healthy lifestyle is by adding good habits rather than focusing on eliminating the bad ones. This approach will allow you to collect good habits a little bit at a time. For example instead of committing to not eating fast food, commit to eating vegetables with every meal. Try to choose 2-3 positive additions to your life that are easy to accomplish and focus on developing these habits over the next month or so. Your goals could be to exercise 3 days per week or to eat a salad every day. You’ll be surprised at how easily these will catch on!
